Being made redundant by Tesco

I've been told that I'm being put on 90 days notice but I haven't been given any information yet on how much pay I'd be entitled to (even though it's been 2 weeks now).
I'm wondering if anyone else here has been laid off by Tesco recently and what kind of package they offered you. As Tesco is a company not in any financial difficulty an are actually hiring plenty of people in other areas, I would have expected something like a month's money for every year but I've just been told by someone aparently in the know that it will only be statutory 1 week per year redundancy pay.
Can this be possible?
Tesco is still making billiopns per year and surely both financially and ethically should be in a position to give far more than just the statutory, which I always assumed was for companies that were in difficulty. Any help on this would be appreciated. I've been there 4 years if that helps.
Thanks

As nice as it would be i dont think i have ever known a company give more redundancy pay than they have to legally which is 1 week for every year worked.
On the up side if they are hiring for other positions they will more likely offer you one of those if they are suitable.:jFriends are like fabric you can never have enough:j0 -
Companies are under no obligation - financially, legally, or morally - to offer more than the statutory redundancy payment, and their financial wealth is irrelevant.
A company's primary responsibility is to its shareholders, and a key component of that responsibility is to ensure the company is structured properly to maximise revenues and minimise costs.
I'm sorry, but you will have to wait and see how this pans out but to rely on some moral responsibility would, in my opinion, be a mistake.0 -
I'm not relying on anything - there's been a number of people laid off by Tesco recently and I was hoping someone involved might have some info.
All the people I knew who got made redundant during the 90's got about a month's pay per year of service but I guess times have changed.0 -
Thats why unfortunately Tesco make sure much money they are canny how they spend it0

What area do you work in? There is a couple of people in my store who are affected by some structure changes, however they aren't being made redundant as such, although I believe it to be an option available to them since their job is technically disappearing. I've been put on consultation by Tesco twice in the last 6 years and I've always been offered
i) apply for the new job
ii)step down but remain on protected pay
iii) leave with redundancy pay.
I've always applied for the new jobs and got them, however I believe that if you aren't successful for the new job you are then offered another job on protected pay.0 -
I work in head office and I also have similar options to the ones above but the jobs offered have been unsuitable or hundreds of miles away. There are also quite a few being made redundant at the same time at the same level so the better jobs will have a lot of competition. The amount of money offered to me would affect whether I need to end up taking one of these jobs.0

Ive never worked for a company that didn't give way more than the minimum. Got made redundant from royal ordnance 8 years ago and got 4 weeks per year plus six months paid notice, similar deal where i work now.4kWp, South facing, 16 x phono solar panels, Solis inverter, Lincolnshire.0 -

I have full sympathy for you there. Its getting really difficult to get things done now that most of the head office roles are moving to India. They've also just announced a massive structure change for superstores, I'm lucky that I'm in a new store so don't have to go into consultation for anything. I've been there twice before and its always been such a nervous time. Good luck!0 -
Offshoring back office/head office jobs is becoming a major issue in the UK I think at the moment. So many jobs are going overseas. Its been a big political issue in the states for a while now already, I predict it will start getting more attention in the uk soon.0
