Renault Clio starting problem - Not the battery any ideas?

Hi,

I have a Clio 03 and today it just would not start it sounded like the battery was causing it. But this battery is 7 months old and is a good one with a 4yr warranty.

So i have a spare battery on charge stuck that one on still nothing, i then put the old battery on and stuck that on to charge and it was mostly fully charged (well 90%).

I had the same issue when i changed the battery, 7 months ago. And thought it was the battery and called out the breakdown recovery who got it going and said it was the battery. So put on a new battery (the 4yr warranty one) and it would still not go. So called out breakdown again and this time the guy says when i told its a brand new battery. 'Just jump it and try starting it' And he fiddled with something and it started straight away and the serval time i tried it when he was there.

I asked him to show me what he done and the wire if remember was just below the oil dipstick.

So am wondering if this is it again but i have had a look and tried a few cables but nothing.

I would phone out AA but i don't have home call out (thought i did, just moved to them as the old one was free with a car insurance policy i had).

Any ideas?

TIA

I'm afriad I'm no expert, but without a bit more information it's difficult to help - not that I'll probably be able to help anyway!

So what happens when you turn they key - is the car:

    * completely dead (battery dead / poor earth, most likely)
    * electrics (dashboard lights up / headlights work etc) works but starter motor doesn't turn (starter motor jammed / starter motor fuse first suspects)
    * starter turns but engine doesn't fire (no fuel and/or no spark to cylinder)

Do try jump-starting, either from another car or a rolling start too...that will help to narrow down the suspects.

as above we need a few more clues, but dont rule the battery out completely,it could still be failing.

    hi

i think the wire down by the dipstick is the ignition feed to the starter motor , if memory serves me right it should be a white wire going to the starter motor solenoid . its a very common fault on those . best fix is to get the old connector cut off and put a new one on but pack it full of grease . that way you wont get high resistance and a non start situation .

that is if it is the wire i think it is .

any more questions , just gimme a shout

We had clio 2002 and had a problem in that, it would not even turn over it was dead. If you waited a few moments it would usely start straight away, never did find out the problem as it only did it now and again.

Have you tried to bump start it.?

Ignition to on, put someone in it, in gear (1st or 2nd), clutch down, push it, clutch up, engine starts, clutch down..

Ring the AA, tell them where you have broken down (i came out of the shop and it would not start :)), then drive to it. :)

    Though, on serious side..

Goto http://www.cliosport.net , join this forum and post this up in the Clio Discussion part of the forum, its at the top.

They should be able to help you, there are some clio specialists about that maybe in your area too. A friendly lot.

  • My Clio (2002) has intermittent starting problems too and during my research to discover what it could be I have found out...

    a) Car starts better with well charged battery
    b) Connection problems with the starter motor - trying cleaning/reconnecting the wire
    c) Flat key fob battery not switching off the immobiliser properly

  • I have a 1999 renault clio, i have had the same problem and i have had the battery replaced by the rac twice and the garage are saying that there are no drains or electrical faults in the car, but yet my battery still keeps discharging, when the car is jump started it will run fine for a day or 2 and then the battery will discharge again.
the lights go on the dash but it makes a clicking noise but doesnt start.

im getting to the end of my tether with it can anyone help and point out what it could be.

    thank you

    you need another garage neena
think of your battery as full of blood drip drip dripping overnight
you would see where the leak is just like you would see where the leak is with the battery if they used best practise
on a 99 clio my suggestions would be
    afterfit radio causing drain
    boot light
    faulty alternator

Could be one of the interior lights staying on incorrectly - check the one in the boot goes out as it should.
