What is the difference between automatic & twin tub powder?

I've been given some boxes of both and am wondering why the handwash/twin tub box says unsuitable for automatic machines.
Could it be because it froths up more and will bubble out of the machine? Will it not dissolve in the dispenser meaning I could put it straight into the drum?
Oh and is twin tub the same as top loading machines?
Seems a shame to have these and not be able to use it. Not very MSE!!
Cheers

Twin tub does froth up more, which is why you can't put it in automatics. But ask over on the Old Style board, someone there is bound to know if you can use it in a top-loader!
And it's possible that if you mixed the two together, say 1 part twin tub to 3 parts automatic, you'd get away with it. But I don't know!
Of course you could use the twin tub for 'normal' household cleaning, no problem! Possibly even washing up - ask the Old Stylers!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I bought twin tub daz once by mistake and my mum told me to put half the amount of twin tub powder in the machine than I would put in if it was "normal" washing powder and then put a bit extra fabric conditioner top help neutralise any residue when it comes to the final rinse and spin cycle. It worked ok for me and the clothes came out very clean.0
