Would it be ok to get rid of BT

I have been thinking for a long time now about getting rid of BT and my home phone. The only reason I didn't was because I had adsl broadband.
I have recently changed my broadband to the virgin fibre optic one, so I now have another box next to my BT box.
If I was to get rid of BT am I right in thinking that it wouldn't effect my broadband now?
Thank you for any help.

You are correct. They are completely separate (and different) systems.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Bear in mind that if you ever want to switch away from Virgin Media in the future then you will first have to pay to have a new BT line installed to get any other broadband service. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Great thank you, I thought as much. I have now cancelled.
Macman, thank you for the advice. I have been with Virgin for about 10 years, so very much doubt I will move but never say never ah. I think the amount of money I would save in line rental etc is worth it.

Not true at all. You pay to have a line installed, if you "go back" to BT, they don't install a new line (in most circumstances the line remains connected but has no service) they just reactivate the line.
When we had a horror of a time with Virgin we were pleased to find the house we'd moved in to 2 years previous had a BT line. Despite it not being in service, it was activated with a phone call to BT with no charges at all.0
