I apologise if this is in the wrong thread.
Does anyone know if its possible for my sister and her 2 kids to move into our 3bed house without anyone knowing or would I/her have to let the authorities know?? If so what would be the implications?? Also would it change for her in terms of WFT/Child Tax?? It would only be a temprorary thing say a month max

For a month max I would say that she is just a family member visting her sibling, this should be fine, however if it turns into a more permanent thing I'd go to the authorities and say 'stayed with family temporarily from 2nd July and on 30th July became aware the stay would be more permanent' and let them decide how to handle itThe proof that some people really are opinionated and ignorant

Which "authorities" are you referring to? If it's short term, returning to her own home or going on to new permanent home, then it's just a visit, but if she's moving on to another temp address, she may need to notify certain people. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

My sister and her kids are planning on renting a property once one becomes available and at an affordable rateOpinions are like ar*eholes - everybody has one!!!!0

Is there a special reason why you don't want anyone to know where your sister is? I am imagining an abusive ex. If your sister's children are school age and them staying with you means they cannot go to their current school then the education authorities need to be consulted (assuming the arrangement is for a month in term time and not just school holidays). The children could change schools (assuming she is going to be staying in the same area as you when she finds a property to rent). Alternatively, she can educate her children at home if she wishes but there are certain regulations regarding how you go about doing this. If there are special circumstances, e.g. escape from abusive ex then the school might be able to help sort something out but they would need evidence of a court order showing ex is not allowed access or they would not be able to stop him taking the children out of school. Apologies if my imagination is running away with me here.“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

Her and her husband have split up and he has/is being totally unreasonable regarding paying bills and their children, so she has decided enough is enough and wants out, but she cant really afford to rent at the minute hence her (and kids) coming to live at ours. I was wondering whether we had to 'declare' them living here and at what potential cost to ourselves. We have a 3-bed house which will accommodate us all. I was wondering whether any of our rates will go up ie council tax and water?? The kids will still go to the same school, nothing changes for them except theyll be living in a different houseOpinions are like ar*eholes - everybody has one!!!!0

As you and OH already live in house, you are already paying full council tax (unless either of you is under 18 or full time student). Water rates are not based on occupancy. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

Do you rent or do you own your house? If you own it, then it's no-one's business. If it's rented, either from HA/Council or privately, then your LL will need to know if it becomes longer term.Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000
