Yeah, also Universal theme park in LA...think there's a Knotts Berry Farm nearby...from what I can remember I think it's about a 2 hour drive from the LA area to San Diego - so the 'world famous San Diego Zoo' and San Diego is a beautiful city in its own right...could take a tram from San Diego to Tijuana too (we did because, hey, Mexico is RIGHT THERE, let's go to Mexico). Though I suppose with a young'un Tijuana may not be a great plan.

As for baseball, off the top of my (American) head - San Diego Padres and Los Angeles...OK, I forget - but I'm just about positive that there's an LA baseball team. :)

    Knotts Berry Farm

Scared the heck outta me ;)

Seriously, the only rides they have there require two pairs of brown undergarments and a sick bag. :D

The US and Canada get very hot in the height of summer and can be unpleasant if you're not used to it. Any other time of year is great depending on what you want to do and where.
  • If getting a baseball game in is important, you will need to go between Apr-Sep for the regular Major League season. Likewise if you want to see the NFL, the regular season runs from Sep-Jan. No guarantees that the city you end up in will have games scheduled at the same time though, so worth checking fixtures...

    Hi Everyone

The more I look the more confused I am so I'd like to ask for your help.

We're being really good with money at the moment but it is taking it's toll as we can't do some of the nicer things we enjoy in life so we have decided to have a holiday as a reward. Our son starts school this september and we are trying to not take him out of school for our hols which is proving expensive.

We want to spend at most around £3500 prefereably around the £2000 mark (inclusive of spending money and absolutely everything) and we want to please everyone,

We like adventure holidays but will be slightly restricted as bailey is only 5, he would love to go to a theme park and likes riding bikes and animals
My partner I'm sure he would love to see baseball or american football
I would love to do some scrapbooking workshops, shopping and possibly go to the theatre. Going to a beach would be great but we wouldn't want to spend most of the holiday there.

I know it's a big ask but can anyone make any suggestions of where I should look at and possibly the best times to go as this has to fit within our budget.

    Thanks
    for looking guys:huh:

I think the best spots in Canada where it will fits in your budget is the CANADA’S WONDERLAND – MAPLE, ONTARIO. I think it is a good spots for your family.

I don't know where you are, but Continental have flights from loads of regional airports to Newark. It's only five hours behind so the jet lag is fightable. Grab a car and head to upstate New York and the Adirondack park. Plenty of adventure stuff, including bob sled rides in Lake Placid on the 1932 Olympic run. Loads of bike riding, hiking, wildlife spotting and lakeside beaches. Even in the height of summer it doesn't get too hot.

Then back down to New York City - someone up there mentioned the Yankee Stadium. There's bound to be a theme park somewhere around. Dump the car back at the airport and head for Manhattan - one great big theme park. Theatre, for you, on Broadway.

If you're there in August then the Saratoga race meet is on. It's their Royal Ascot, but with considerably less oppressive formality. The racing is a cheap as you like, but be warned that hotel rooms may prove to be a little expensive in Saratoga itself.

Scrapbooking - not a clue. Sorry.

    That's a big ask for £2k.....

normally for flights alone to Canada or the US for three of us we are around £1800.... doesn't leave much for spending or accommodation. We have us Canadian Affair to get good prices, would not touch Continental with someone else's bargepole via Newark (based on personal experience)

We've been to Ontario and really liked it, we;ve been to Florida and it was good, we've been to Western Canada (whistler and Rockies) and LOVED it.... but I really wouldn't want to do it on a budget, that's just teasing yourselves, tbh. Visiting bears out in the wild isn't cheap, neither is going on whalewatching trips via boat, but it's a long way to go NOT to do them.

Have you thought about going somewhere in Europe that would provide lots of things to do for everyone (not the baseball and scrapbooking, obviously) and saving up for a bigger holiday once he's older and would appreciate it more.:)

The Canadian Dollar exchange rate is terrible at the moment, the US dollar isn't much better (yes I know the Euro isn't great either, but it's much cheaper to get there)

We always head to Denver, Colorado. I have family there so it works well as a base and is very picturesque. There's loads of outdoorsy stuff to do and is a really nice State with lots of diverse environments.

I'm a big fan of road trips though, so next Jan we'll be driving out to the Grand Canyon, San Diego, LA, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Mount Rushmore and then back down to Denver. It's about a 3500 mile circle and we'll take maybe a week to do it. Last year we went to Las Vegas, but the drive back was pretty boring as we'd seen everything on the way there. That's why this time i wanted to do a circlular route. You need a good car for this though, not the economy models. We had a Ford Expedition (massive SUV) with a 5.4l V8. It's definitely worth getting a 4x4 if you plan any driving in the mountains, especially in winter.

Oh, and in Denver they have MLB, NFL and NHL teams.

    Best holiday ever!
