Can I do anything?

Hi.. after some advice please ..
When I took out my mortgage I got some independant life insurance from Norwich Union. When I remortgaged, I got a new policy. At the time I'm pretty sure I believed it was a top up, but being very silly I didn't check the documents properly and found out not so long ago that I had in fact then got 2 polices, 1 covering the original mortgage amount and the 2nd policy covering the total of the new mortgage, therefore paying more than I needed to every month - for nearly 3 years! I immediately cancelled the original policy but when I spoke to NU I was just told it was up to me to know if I was paying too much or not, but I feel I was mislead somewhere along the line, either by the financial advisor I used (who is no longer practising!), or NU, I feel that they had a duty of care to say to me 'hey, do you realise you're doubling up here and that you're covering way more than your mortgage?'
Can I do anything?

Well this isn't true and I think this is an important point.
Lots of people get more life insruance than jsut covering a mortgage.
For example couples with children need to replace child care if one of them dies.
You seem to be assuming that anything more than 100% of the mortgage is automatically unnecessary and therefore a mis-sell.
This is not the case.
There are lots of reasons for wanting more life cover.
It's possible it was more than YOU wanted, but that is a different issue to it being automatically a bad idea to have more than the mortgage.I was just told it was up to me to know if I was paying too much or not
If they did not provide advice then they are not liable.but I feel I was mislead somewhere along the line, either by the financial advisor I used (who is no longer practising!), or NU
It sounds very much like the financial advisor would have been advising you.
So NU would not be liable.
They just provided the insurance, they did not advise you.I feel that they had a duty of care to say to me 'hey, do you realise you're doubling up here and that you're covering way more than your mortgage?'
No they don't.
Firstly it's you financial advisors job to do that.
Secondly you are assuming that doubling up is automatically wrong.
Whereas some people actually do want to cover more than just the mortgage, so there is nothing blatantly wong that NU should have picked up on.Can I do anything?
I don't know toi be honest.
But I thinkthe liability is with your financial advisor.
Whether their insurance is still in place after they have stopped practising I don't know, but that is the route you need to go down.0
