First time buyer + energy grants

Hi everyone,

We have seen a house which we really want. However it has quite a poor energy rating (E). Its a 1930's semi and we would install cavity wall insulation. Also the boiler is 20 years old (still in good condition) but are there any grants available for the installation of a new heating system; especially as we are not on any benefits.

any help much appreciated.

Steve

Depending on which part of the country you live, and your personal circumstances, there may be something available to you. The Energy Savings Trust website has a grants page where you can search for various types of energy efficiency funding.

Next, I would contact your local council, see if they have a Warm Front team. The council may also have offers available such as free CWI or loft insulation.

The difference in running costs between A and E may be much less than you think.

Work out how much any "improvement" will REALLY save you before spending hundreds of pounds.

What utter twaddle. There is a vast difference. Moving a property from an E to a D would reduce your bills by approx. 3rd.

The cavity walls will cost next to nothing to fill and will increase your rating quite a bit. Have a look on your councils website under energy efficiency to see what discount schemes they recommend. As another poster said you could also contact the Energy Savings Trust on 0800 512012. Check youf loft also. You should be able to get the cavities filled from £99 depending on your area.

As you don't receive benefits you are unlikely to get help with the boiler.

To get grants you generally have to be on some kind of benefits (which is only fair really, why should I pay for your boiler when you are perfectly able to?), however as these vary from place to place you should ring your local borough or district council and find out.
