Value of my kit?

Options
Hi all,

I'm insuring my Macbook and photography kit, and I was hoping any aspiring photographers could all help me value it :)

I have :
D80 and 18-55mm VR lens bought Christmas '08 for £391
70-300mm VR lens bought May this year for £391 (too, oddly)
Lowepro Vertex 100 AW this month for £90
Lowest Macbook model available upgraded to 2GB of Ram and a 250GB hard disk, bought October '07

I'm thinking about £1500 but I'd really appreciate a few extra opinions :)

Thanks in advance, Boopop

Can't you insure it on a new-for-old basis? Then you just need the new prices I think.

Yeah it's new for old. Is that how it works? Just get the value of the kit new? The D80 for example has been superseded, does that mean I should get the value of the D90? Prices for the nikon stuff is likely to go up due to the exchange rate.

Yes, that is exactly how it works - hence "new for old". Yes, go for the D90 if the D80 is no longer for sale. E.G. my Canon 30D is insrued for the value of a 40D. Prices have been going up for everything so I would review each year on your own, especialy since these might be specified items and so won't be protected with inflationary increases. That said, even if they are, their prices are going up higher than inflation. I would go 5% higher for now - you could always consider, say, the cards uninsured and take the hit to save the value.

I use amazon and warehouse express to value stuff, but that is a little risky - they are cheaper than what some insurers might look at - so if you want to be 100% safe try valuing at Jessops cost.

One thing, I take it you are covering this under household insurance? In my experience this is much cheaper than a specific all risks policy just for the kit, unless you are semi pro and want the liability cover too.

    Bit confused.
If these items are all below £1500 then why do you need to specify them seperately?
Provided they are under the "single item limit" then they will all be covered automatically by house insurance.

Only is the OP builds these items into the value of his contents... I guessed that was what he was asking, though did miss the bit about £1,500!
