Is mould dangerous?

Options
Morning all.

I live in a rented flat which seemingly has a serious mould problem in both bathrooms.

We had an electrician come in to look at something else and in the process, he had to look behind the water boiler - and we've discovered a ton of mould - black, flattish mould. My bathroom floor crunches underfoot and is damp.

Now then - our landlady is saying mould is perfectly safe but I know it's not - I've been having a tight chest and trouble with breathing, and I mean, this can't help!

They are taking their time sorting this out and was wondering if I can trouble you for advice. Oh - they are saying it isn't mould, but 'condensation'.

But it's furry bloody condensation!

Yes, mould is a health hazard

Are you able to keep the bathrooms ventlated.

To get rid of the existing mould try Dettol Mould & Mildew Remover. It is very good, spray it on - 5 to 10 minutes the mould is gone. Use it regularly to keep the mould at at bay, catch the mould early to stop it spreading.

It is dangerous, your landlady is a skinflint who does not give a hoot about your health, if its black mold it can give you a variety of illnesses it is linked with 'sick building syndrome'

I got priority housing from he council because the flat i rented hd mold in it and i only noticed it because the ceiling fell in it was all over the place i always wondered why the bathroom had a dank musty feel to the air, it stank really bad too and i was getting asthma attacks regular,

unfortunately the council didn't tell me i would be moved to a flat with a cockroach infestation ....

    Yes. It is dangerous.

'Normal' black staining of silicone is ok (though not desirable) but anything more than that is something that needs dealing with. Washing etc. Then good ventilation etc.

You can get all sorts of respiratory problems from it.

Might be worth getting advice from your local council - the private rentals officer might be interested to know about this health hazard.......

Enviromental Health dept at the council can serve a notice on the landlord and pursue enforcement action on your behalf.

    Try Shelter for advice http://england.shelter.org.uk/

They can advise on all aspects of landlord/tenant issues freephone 0808 800 4444
