Squeaky door handles

Hey there,

Has anyone got any tips for silencing squeaky door handles? These are your normal brass effect door handles. Almost every door throughout the house makes this noise when you push down the handle!

The door hinges have all been easily fixed with a bit of WD-40. I'm just wondering if the same would fix the door handles?

Thanks!

WD40 would probably get rid of the squeak, but there are a couple of problems. First, it may well discolour the lacquer if you're not careful, and the other problem is that the residual WD40 will attract dust, eventually gumming things up. Not a huge issue on handles, but it's advisable not to use WD40 on locks for this reason.

One of the best and cheapest ways is to get some graphite powder and work that into the mechanism. You can buy graphite powder from most hardware stores, but for a small amount like this there's an even cheaper way. Get an ordinary pencil, and use a penknife or similar to scrape off some of the "lead" - which is actually graphite. Then apply this to the gubbins and work it in a bit.

WD40 is not primarily a lubricant, it is a moisture dispersant. However it will work for a limited period.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
