Mosquito & Insect Repellent?

Heading to Spain in Aug. and last year I got quite a few bug bites while sitting outside in the evening...so this year I'm going with something good to put on my skin so that won't happen again. What do you use and has anyone used those "whipes" ? Do they work as good as spray?

You will probably always get the odd bite. I think there are mosquito gods Last year my SIL got eaten alive - she's olive skinned and had never been bitten before. And good old white me only got a few bites and I'm normally a target.
