Credit card conundrum

Hi, I'm 20 years old and have a Visa electron card with Halifax, I rang them up a few days ago and she said that buying online with a debit card is very dangeous, and suggested I apply for a credit card instead.

I've been reading threads and topics about credit cards but it's all just confused me, was hoping if someone could suggest one?

If you need anymore information please feel free to ask.

Thanks in advance

Why not apply with Halifax? That will have been what they were after, after all.

If you're just going to use it for buying stuff on the net and planning on paying it all off straight away then you're best off with a card that will give you cashback or the like. Read Martin's article on credit cards to get some ideas.

The card you can apply for and ultimately receive is largely dependent on your credit status and financial standing.
For example, if you are 'bad' then you should be looking towards the likes of Vanquis etc.
But if you are 'good' then the options are many
    Hope this helps

You get extra protection with credit cards you don't get with debit cards.

Forget about "the best deal" for now. If you've not had a history of credit then you won't get the best deals. Take a card with Halifax who you already have some history with, spend on it, clear it each month by direct debit to ensure you don't pay any interest. Repeat for over a year and you'll have helped establish a credit rating that may open up better deals for you.
