Tesco own brand 5W/30 semi-synthetic oil reduced down to £3 per liter

Options
Hello All

I have been to Tesco last night and noticed they have, in addition to the flat wiper blades reduced to £3, reduced 5W/30 2 liter cans down to £6 each. On the back it says it is specially developed for Ford Zetec engine and listed some numbers that match the recommended oil for the Puma.

My question is, is this oil ok? In other words, is it different from, say, Castrol Magnatec or Ford's own oil?

I don't need it now, as I have serviced the car yesterday at the dealer's, however, I am thinking to stock up for the prewinter oil change!

Any thoughts or ideas are gratefully received.

  • You are welcome goldspanners. I might go and buy some. Although Wilkonson do their own brand for £6.99 per 2 liters can all year round, I don't know why my gut feeling tells me not to buy it!! May be because Tesco have a different veiw of the game and priced theirs at £12 so it looks so tempting when it is half price? I don't know!

I used to work for an oil company.

As long as the spec on the can covers the spec that the car manufacturer requires, the Tesco product will be fine.

Nearly all the "work" that engine oil does is performed by the chemical additives that are blended into the base lubricating oil. There are only two or three additive manufacturers in the UK and all major and minor brands of oil will source their additives from one or more of them.

The additive in Tesco's oil will be on a par with that of the major brands purely because, whoever makes Tesco's oil will be using the same ones as everyone else. The quality of the base lubricating oil and the way the additives are mixed with it are also specified by the additive manufacturer in order that his additives will work to the required standards.
  • goldspanner, I am sorry, I have just checked Wilkonson's website and the oil is for £7.99 there! I assume it is the same price as in store!

david39 thank you so much for the info which pretty much nailed it! Tesco here I come tomorrow!lol

This offer applies for their fully synthetic oil too.

    It's £6 for a 2 litre bottle (but still £20 for their 4L bottle)

The shelf label was still showing £12 when I bought mine, but it scanned for £6 :)

Thanks OP. Just looked on the site and saw that the 10/40 is half price too (£4.50 for 2L).
