Windows reformatted itself without asking!

Had my laptop about 7 years been fine so far. This morning turned it on and it mentioned a corrupt file I clicked ok without reading it..... and it seems as though I've got a fresh copy of Windows all files gone programs still installed and working. Just no files and settings bookmarks etc.

Any ideas?

You can always figure out if it was formatted by looking at when windows was installed

for XP Pro it's. Start > run > type "cmd" and click OK > then type in "systeminfo" when the black screen comes up.

For XP Home it's. Start > help and support > click on "Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems" > run the "Network Diagnostics" then under
Computer Information expand the Operating System menu and look for InstallDate =

Are the files actually missing OR have you just lost all your shortcuts and any files on the desktop?

All too often people complain everythings been deleted when in fact the shortcuts have just gone awol.

It could have been a corrupt profile and just created a new one.
