Faulty freezer

I have a freezer in garage which was purchased in Jan 08 from Currys, we paid just over £300 online.

The freezer is a fridgair, the control panel keeps saying its -9c and flashes that it isnt right despite it being like this for past few days and even used the button to give it a fast freeze to know avail its seems to be on all time

I looked on net and several people report exact same issue I have but no resolution

Now before I approach Currys or manuafter. I am aware that I have up to 6 years under SOGA for it to work reasonable. I believe that I have to prove it is defective after 6 months but will I need some one to indepdantly verify this and if yes this could be costly.

Any advice thanks

Look like I am covered under EU directive 1999/44/EC

The fact is that a two-year guarantee applies for the sale of all consumer goods everywhere in the EU (Directive 1999/44/EC). In some countries, this may be more, and some manufacturers also choose to offer a longer warranty period.

 my daughter & her hubby bought one from Comet 2 weeks ago
Filled it up with £170 of meat from costco

Despite the light still being on and no obvious sign of any problem It defrosted itself the whole lots ruined
He took it back to Comet it was replaced there & then
They said to pop back in the week and get a form to claim for the food from Comet
"Very funny, Scotty. Now beam down my clothes."

    Forget that thing.

Was the freezer designed to be kept outside? Are the elements enclosed or exposed at the back? If not then it's likely been too cold in the garage over the winter and you'll have effectively misused it and won't have any comeback. Same happened to mine. Replaced it with a chest freezer that's designed for the job.

The garage is connected to the house and it has a radiator in it

I dont know is its meant to be left in garage or not the garage is part utility we have freezer, washing machine and tumble with double radiator and CH boiler

If its was too cold in garage surely it would go then not now, it started playing up on Tuesday when it was a warm day the roof it flat

The elements are exposed at the back

Ah, fair enough, as long as you've been using it within its operating temperature. You were on the right lines with next actions in your first post, ignore the EU misconception.

Ours was a gradual decline caused by the elements being exposed over the winter and the internal bits getting frosted up. We only got the 'not cold enough' warnings much later after the cold spell.

    What a flaming carry on

After much carry on the manufacturers have said they will as a gesture of good will pay to get it fixed

They said they will contact a local guy to come and do this, which happens to be same guy I booked the other day to find the fault and if its a inherent fault I will contact the retailer

It turns out as I said before the issue is that the freezer although claims to be frost free it is not frost free, there is a large chunk of metal at the back that is all iced up and needs 3 days to device before a soft mod can be applied

"Problem fixed by service engineer ... sensor was in the wrong place, known issue. Sensor position caused fast defrost cycle, that only defrosted the bottom 6" of cooling chamber."

So I been miss sold a freezer and I lost around £200 of food as the food has not frozen proper its now -2c after the guys briefly opened the door, but ha`s been -5c the last few days

At the back of the freezer hidden behind the grills and a external metal plate in the back there is a large metal plate that runs along the length of the freezer which is iced up

You cant see it unless its opened up. If I took the plastic shelving out it only goes 2/3rd of the width of the freezer, he said the other 3rd houses the metal block and the mechanics of the freezer. Its this block that needs defrosting

He said I had to take all frozen tuff out much of which is now ruined and let it defrost, it wil take 3 days. he will then do a soft mod, by that I think he means moving the sensor. He said this model with its age had a fault with it

Now where in the manual does it state it needs doing, it states its 'frost free'
