Tesco again (sorry!)

I hope this is the right place to post this - I'm at my wits end and need some advice.
1. Placed an order for six books from Tesco's online bookstore on 2 December. All books stated 24 hour availability , and was given an approx. delivery date of 7 dec.
2. 7 Dec comes and goes with no sign of my books and no contact from Tesco.
3. I send them an e-mail on 9 Dec asking for an update. They reply 12 Dec to say that one of the books I ordered is out of print but if I phone their Customer Services and cancel that one book the rest of my order can be dispatched. I'm pretty cheesed off at not being told sooner about the out of print book, so I phoned customer services on 13 Dec, cancelled my whole order and sent an e-mail back to them the same day also cancelling the whole order.
4. I placed an order for the same books from Amazon (who delivered my entire order, for free, in less than a week.)
5. On 18 Dec, Tesco send me an e-mail saying that they can't cancel my order as their request "didn't reach the supplier in time" but if I want (!) I can send the books back. They also told me that they didn't supply customers with pre-paid returns labels.
So today Omega delivered a box of books from Tesco including the book that was supposedly out of print. The date on the invoice is 21 Dec - how can they not stop an order 8 days before it's dispatched????
What I really want now is for them to send Omega back to collect the books as not only can I not really afford to pay the return postage for these heavy books at this time of year (especially after paying for 2 sets of books), but I would also have to drag my baby and toddler out to the post office in this freezing weather. Do I have any rights to ask them to do this?
Thanks for having the patience to read this!

How about taking them to your local Tesco store and leaving them there?
Also you state that they said that "their" request to cancel the order didn't reach the supplier in time... your contract is with Tesco, so whatever communication problems they have with their suppliers is their problem.
And finally, if they have charged your card I would initiate a chargeback as they have done so after you cancelled.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking of dumping the package at the Customer Service (hah!) desk but didnt want the worry of them "going missing".
I'll have a look into doing a chargeback if I dont get any joy from them. I've sent an e-mail to them asking them to come and pick up their books -I'll let you know what I get back.
Merry Christmas!

You should have refused delivery. You have cancelled and your contract was with them. Write to them informing them they have 7 days to arrange collection or you will dispose of them.
