Im so worried about my parents, any benefits they can claim???

Hi,
Its a long story but I';m very worried about my parents.
My dad got made redundent in Decmeber and is yet to find a job. Hes had 6 months of JSA and now apparently he cant have anymore becasue its been 6 months.
My mum has ms and cant work, she has a full time carer which the govt pay for and also goes to a day centre which they pay for. She has a motabilty car which her disability living allowence pays for. She also get incapacity benefit. She has money in her acct to pay the carer etc but this money cant be used to pay household bills.
There total income is now around £500 per month which is my mums benefits that can be used for living. They own their own home and luckily they had insurance which is paying the mortgage for now. What if this ends and they cant pay the mortgage? Its been adapted for my mum so they couldnt go into private rented or anything like that. My dad has thought about social housing/warden assisted but as they have equity in the house they probably wont be able to get it.
My dad has always been the one to pay the bills, and I was trying to get into my mum today that her benefit money has to be used to pay the bills, elec food etc as my dad has nothing coming in, is it right that you can only claim JSA for 6 months?
Im worried as my dad is living off his credit card which I think hasa now been stopped, hes getting really down about havng no money and I cant beleive they are expected to live on £500 a month incuding all bills.
To be honest, I feel sick with worry. My poor dad feels crap and there must be some other help they can get???? Hes going to go to CAB this week and see what they say.

    Can your Dad not claim for income based JSA?

    One thing that you can help with is to help them go through their bills etc and chaeck that they are not paying for anything that would be classed as unnecessary given the circumstances.

    Thanks Mr Cow, Can you claim income based JSA for longer than 6 months? He has been employed all his life so has his NI paid up to date if that was to make any difference?

    I always thought it was just contributions based JSA that would "run out" after a period of time and then you switched to income based depending on your circumstances?

    Types of Jobseeker's Allowance

    1. Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance

    Income based Jobseeker's Allowance is 'means tested', this involves calculating how much you (and your family) need to live on according to their regulations. You can claim Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance if:
    • You have an insufficient contributions record;
    • Your contributory JSA has run out after six months;
    • You are claiming for a partner.
    When you claim income based JSA you claim separate allowances for yourself, any adult dependant and your children. You can also claim any premiums for which you or your dependants may qualify, such as Family Premium or Lone Parent Premium. If you have a mortgage on your home, you may also claim for mortgage interest payments.

    You should go onto the "Entitled to" website and see whether they are claiming for what they should be correctly.
