OH and I bought a 2nd hand VW Bora a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately we were caught out and so far have had to spend just over £2000 getting it fixed
On Thursday we got it back from the VW garage having had a new gearbox (because of a problem with the differential bearing - cost us £1200 to fix). Friday I drove it to work, Friday afternoon I got in it and it wouldn't start.
RAC came out and said it's a faulty connection on the starter motor, which was taken out so they could fit the gearbox. Phoned VW garage who were most apologetic and offered a free exec valet and bottle of champagne (and would I tell VW customer service when they phone that I'm happy with their work???).
Got in it yesterday and it won't start again. Phoned VW garage who told us to call RAC and get it over to them! We don't have Homestart on our membership so we said we couldn't. They then told us to get a flat bed truck and get it over to them. Again, we said no.
The situation now is that they're going to phone us Monday morning about it. I'd appreciate any advice on how to proceed with this. Should they be the ones to arrange to get it to their workshop at their expense? And just what are my rights in this situation?
I need objective advice because at the moment I'm stuck in the red mist
Thanks,
EDC

get a friend with a car and a peice of rope, tow it far enough from your house so you can call the RAC.

Did you say you bought it 2 weeks ago and you've already spent £2000 on it? How old was it, what was the mileage, how much did you spend on it, and is there any reason why you feel you should be the one spending all that money on top of what you paid?
I'd be handing back that lemon to them straight away, demand my money back including the money already spent on repairs and walk away as fast as possible if it were me.0 -
We bought the car privately so can't take it back.
It's only an 05 plate and the mileage is not too bad, only 48,000.
We could tow it then call the RAC, but I think you're limited to the amount of times you can call them out in any one year. As we only renewed last week and have used up one 'life' already I don't feel inclined to use another when it's the garage's fault.

They accepted laibility when I phoned them Friday and offered the exec valet and champers surely? The fault is the connection on the starter motor they removed and replaced when they did the gearbox. It worked fine up until then.

Sorry, I thought you had bought it from the garage.

If the fault which has developped is linked to them not doing the job properly, then you're quite right you shouldn't have to be put at inconvenience or costs. I'd suggest you phone them tomorrow and explain you can't get it towed without incurring major costs and what do they propose to do about it?0
