Hanging basket brackets..What size rawl plug & screw?

Hello

I need to fit some hanging basket brackets. These are 16" diameter baskets and I imagine quite heavy when full and watered.

I've bought the B&Q round hook bracket but not the fitting kit as they looked very small. Instead I've bought two packs of fittings and was wondering which to use:

10mm thick rawlplugs with 50mm zinc screws.

8mm thick rawl plugs with 75mm zinc screws.

Should I drill into the brick wall or into the mortar?

Appreciate the advice.;)

8mm plugs should be ample, you'll get a far better fixing in the brick.

One of mine fell out a couple of weeks back, funny that because I have used that fixing for 2 years and now it decides it wants to leave the wall

I put some longer screws in and again it fell out so I drilled into brick work and used different screws which were much tighter fit that the other ones

I agree with poster 2 use brick if you can. I also dab a drop of oil on screw before screwing because I often have screws that are stiff/rust after a couple of years

I have done baskets for many years and this year they been my best
  • I should have said in my opening post that 50mm and 75mm refers to the length of the screws.

So use the longer thinner ones instead of the shorter thicker ones then?

Into brick then but should I go in straight or angle the drill downwards?

May have to have a cold beer first while I contemplate the job in hand.;)

I think your better using the right thickness/length for rawlplug/screw so its a tight fit

I used them plasyplugs from Wilkinsons they are grey in colour and have two extra lugs that come out, they were around £1

Or go for heavy duty plugs

Drill straight, it will make fixing the brackets easier.

Maybe get Mrs Knott-Lewis to answer that one.:rotfl:
