unable to access word document

hi,
I'd appreciate your help.
trying to acccess a word document from my documents, had done so several times with no probs.

now, if i try offline - i just get a blank page, the dial up connection box appears and i'm unable to delete it, or close the page without using control/alt/del/.

if i try while online - it appears to load, but i still get a blank page and a notice appears saying 'word has encountered a prob and needs to close'.

what would cause this to happen and how do i sort it?

thnx.

Which version of Office are you using?

Does the document you are trying to open contain web content?

Can you simply open MS Word from the start menu (a blank document)?

    hi,
    thanks for helping,

    it's micro office 2000 SR-1 Prof.

the document is a compiliation of cut and pasted snippets from internet.

i can open a new, blank word doc both from the m.w. shortcut icon, or from start - no probs,

i can go to documents and open every other saved m.w. doc i have no prob, both while online and off - but not that one particular saved m.w. document.

In all probability the stuff that you have pasted into Word has hyperlinks in it that point to pages on the Internet, rather than to content on your PC, and it's not able to handle that correctly.

It's a long time since I used Word 2000, but IIRC, you can use "Paste Special" instead of "Paste" to paste material without all of its formatting, which should strip out the hyperlinks. Whether you then end up with something that's still readable is another matter...

I agree, probably best to scrap that document.

It may be trying to link to some secure content (you had to log in to something to see it) so word will be prevented from reaching that content again, who knows.

May have worked if the content was saved locally before hand.

    thanks for your responses.

it may contain a couple of hyperlinks, i can't remember. the thing that confuses me is that i could access it fine, and hadn't added anything from the previous time of looking at it when i could access it (if that makes sense?), went to access it another day and it started to load and just stopped.

i know i definitely didn't have anything from a secure content site on it - nothing i had had to log into to get the info - it's all just snippets of gardening advice!

that's really disappointing if i have to scrap it - took me weeks to put together. c'est la vie - i guess.

    what does IIRC mean, please?

and where do i find paste special?

( as well as using dial-up which has the the speed of a anaesthetised sloth,on a good day, i'm probably a troglodyte in computing knowledge in comparison compared to you folks!!)

    - thanks for help , it's appreciated

Yes, you've probably got links to internet images and the like that try to refresh whenever you open the document.

    Try the following:

    Go online
    Open the document
On the EDIT menu select LINKS

You'll now see a dialog with all of the various links out onto the internet

Select all of the items in the list (click the first one, hold shift, click the last one)
    Click BREAK LINKS

Answer YES to the prompt "Are you sure you wish to break the selected links"
    Click OK

You should now be able to view and edit the document offline

    Hope this helps!

    THANK YOU - ALL

i've been pootling around trying to open it, tried to open via word pad and it said it couldn't support the graphics - you all hit the nail on the head. finally managed to get it open and deleted the last hyperlink i added and some of the pics - it now opens ok. your advice has remedied the prob, and is also useful to me for future reference.

    i'm chuffed.

you folks are great. much appreciated.
