Claiming for eye tests while in the army?

Options
Just a quick question-my husband is in the army and has just had an eye test and contact lense check at specsavers. Can he claim the cost back through JPA, or do they have to pay for there own tests?
Thanks, Jo

there is a form that needs filling in by the optician which gives you your eye test cost back

    contact admin for help
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.
  • Eye test should be covered if he's a VDU (visual display unit, i.e. computer monitor) user, contact lens check is a personal expense and therefore not reimbursed, so make sure you have an itemised receipt along with the form completed by the optician.

You may find that he should have obtained the form first and asked the option to complete.
I am NOT a mortgage & insurance adviser - or anything to do with finance, that was put on by the new system I dont know why?!

if you are lucky your HR will let you do this retrospectively

I did it a coiuple of months back. Simply keep a copy of the receipt and the prescription. Then put in a claim on JPA (micellaneous expenses if I remember). on the justification put down eye test required for duty purposes (Weapons handling, VDU user etc).

Not sure if these rules vary locally, but where I work you are required to go through the Med Centre BEFORE having the eye test, and you have to use the optician they specify.

You'd probably get away with claiming it on JPA regardless of how you arranged it, but there is a chance it could get picked up for audit and someone actually notices the correct procedure hasn't been followed (which in my experience is doubtful!).

That old local rules thing. My Med Centre said to just go and do it.......
Its great, the whole JPA thing is supposed to cut down on this sort of unnecessary bureaucracy and still we have to hang on to old ways of doing things.
