Hi lovely Old Stylers,
I've posted this in family/health too, I hope that's ok?
I need some help. My DD1 has just been fitted with a brace for the first time. It's a removable one, but she has to leave in all the time. I'm really unsure about the whole braces thing, it's our first experience of it.
She's getting stomach ache, and feeling a bit sick, which the orthodontist explained was the build up of stomach acid. Because the brain thinks the mouth is eating, so it's prepares the stomach to receive food.
She's been advised to eat soft, non-sticky food - nothing hard that could break her brace, and also her molars are covered which means she can't chew or grind food down. Soft easy to swallow meal + lunch box ideas please?
I feel at a loss to know how to manage this. HEEELLLLLPPPP please!

How about mashed potatoes, sausage and peas?
Paella would be ok too or omellette. Spag bol if the topping is well cooked and the veg is not left crunchy.
For a lunchbox try pasta salad or couscous & veg

Thanks for that. Mash is a great idea, and pasta. Spag bol is her favourite meal :j
She can't eat eggs... they make her feel sick. (very annoying for me - but hey-ho) No easy scrambled egg teas here! :rolleyes:MMSSB Club Founder Member

Hi Sarah,
There are some recipes on this website. Hopefully you can find something there. I'd also suggest milky desserts to help neutralise the acid.
Good luck!0 -

From personal experience I had problems after I'd had a brace as I didn't keep my mouth clean enough. It might be best to check she is keeping her mouth clean.Debt-free day: 8th May 2015 "Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck," Dalai Llama0 -
I work within the dental field and you will find that after a few days that they will get used to having the brace in. It will take time especially as it covers her back teeth which can be tricky to get used to. It is important that she keeps on trying. To start off with have a soft diet and cut food into small pieces and then you can progress to more harder foods and larger pieces.
Make sure that you avoid any sticky foods and also dont bire directly into any foods (eg an apple)
From a tooth decay point of view limit sugary foods / drinks to meal times only.
Ensure that the brace is removed and rinsed off after meals as food and plaque can get trapped really easily.
Good luck0 -
When my son first got his braces He ate soup with bread to dip in, pasta, stew, mashed potato, sandwiches without crusts with soft fillings such as tuna mayo/egg mayo etc.
He was fine quite soon after having his braces fitted, but when he has them tightened they feel a bit sore for the rest of the day.0 -

My 2 have both had braces fitted this year. Took them both about a week to adjust food wise, then they could eat anything.
For packed lunches they had soup or spaghetti hoops in a flask, or cous cous. I then packed jelly, custard, fruit smoothy pouches all for ease of eating! Not normal stuff I would pack for them, but it did the trick.
DD was far better than DS at adjusting, but she loved the cous cous so continued to have it!0
