Wireless difficulties

Just wondering if anyone who knows more than me can assist here.

I purchased a new laptop on Wednesday, and use it alongside my desktop. I use both as I have one program that runs full screen, so run that on desktop and do other things with laptop at the same time.

However, I'm not constantly being disconnected from the internet. 4 times in the space of 20mins tonight, and this problem happens on both computers but only since I purchased the laptop. I have a wireless connection through Sky Broadband, and was just wondering if maybe it's something to do with positioning. I have my laptop around about a 130 degree angle and a few metres from my desktop. Would it be interfering with both connections?

Is the desktop wireless? Where is the router in relation to both?

Desktop is also wireless, router is plugged into the master approximatly 8 metres away, just on a guestimate.

If it is the wireless connection dropping, rather than sky, then it is probably wireless interference, last time I saw the same thing, moving the laptop a foot or two away from the desktop cured it. If the desktop is using a usb wireless dongle, you could try a different port, or wire the desktop if feasible.

Just found from the other person with a computer in house, their desktop has also been cutting out. It's nowhere near the other two, but I'm willing to go with the guess it's interference. Unfortunatly it's not practical to wire it, but the router we do have is a good few years old now.

    Thanks for the help

either as above or you're getting RFI from another source...try locking your router to a channel the opposite end of the range than it currently is set to
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

...and make sure the router's set to auto-allocate addresses !!

To check that it isn't sky dropping, ping the router from the cmd prompt.

    ping -t 192.168.0.1

    or possibly 192.168.1.1

Then switch to that screen when it drops.

It could also be another router nearby on the same channel, so you could try a different channel in the wireless router config.

Another thing you could try is repositioning the router or router aerial slightly.

make sure your router timeout is not specified anything to other than "0" in the router settings - may be there is a timelimit been put on for connections to cease. "0" - is a constant live connnection.
