council tax- Amount per month?

Hi there, my flat purchase is going along OK and I am hopeful of a Mid-End July completion date, anyway back to the main story.
I've found out the council tax in my area is £1,015 for a band A (which the flat is)
If I started paying the council tax at the beginning of august then how would it be calculated to work out my monthly payment. Is it just £1,015 divide by 12. This equals £84 a month but I don't know if this is the right way it's worked out.
If someone who has the joy of paying council tax:rolleyes: can tell me the amount per month so I can try and create a budget.
Regards
Ben

I don't know if its a common practice or if there is always an additional option for 12, but some councils like to front load it to the first 10 months of the year so the bill is paid from April to Jan, for example.0

Yes I know what you're saying in a way, I've heard loads of stories, just want to get the facts. As I said my first payment would be in August, my local council is North Lincolnshire Council, does anybody know if they let you pay in Monthly Direct Debit Instalments?

Council tax "year" runs 1st April to 31st march, you have 3 options
- pay 100% of charge in advance as one off lump sum
- pay 50% now and 50 % later
- pay by 10 instalments (but in your case read on...)
where it is paid by instalments (rather than lump sums) then by "law" councils must collect it in 10 equal instalments from April to Jan (you do not pay anything in Feb and Mar). No council is allowed to collect in 12 instalments
however, where you move in during the year what they will do is calculate the charge from the date you move in to the end of the year , ie 31 March 2010.
so in your case as I can't be bothered to do the calculation for a mid July start for simplicity sake lets say you complete on 1st August, you will pay:
period due 1 Aug 2009 - 31 March 2010 = 8 months
amount due £1015 x 8/12 = £676.66
1Aug - 1 jan inclusive = 6 instalments
you will pay £676.66 / 6 = £112.77 per month from 1 Aug to 1 Jan. You will pay nothing on 1 Feb and 1 Mar. on 1 april you will pay 1/10th of whatever next year's annual charge will be. If you do indeed complete in mid July then your first instalment may be bigger than the remaining 5 so as to collect for July and Aug, or they may simply spread the whole lot as per above calculation working in days rather than months
some councils let you chose the date of collection, others don't, often its collected on 1st of the month0 -
I have always paid mine over 12 months, never asked for it, its bee like it since i moved in... No extra charges either...0

Council Tax is a daily charge ie total amount divided by 365, then times by the number of days between your moving in date and 31 March 2010. You would then be billed for that amount in instalments, at the moment from 1st August until 1st jan 2010 (6). Some authorities will let you stretch it to 8 if you ask.

Absolute tosh.
I know lots of people who now pay over 12 months, some of whom expressed surprise when i told them I had to pay over 10.0 -
Someone already stole my response! :rotfl:0 -
Not sure if this will apply to you but there is a 25% discount if you are living in a property on your own.
Also, if you're paying by direct debit over 10 months (or less) rather than every month make sure they don't take extra payments in feb and march (our local council did this to one of my colleagues but they did refund it when the error was pointed out).0 -

Legally the only option the council have to give is 10 instalments from April, decreasing by 1 instalment each month , with a minimum of 1. (Schedule 1 of the CTAX(Administration and Enforcement) regs 1992).
Providing the authority make the option available then they can over the 12 instalments although many will only due it for hardship issues.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
