Closing a bank account

I have a basic current account with Barclays that I wish to close today. Can I just wander into a branch to do this with my cash card, paying in books etc and do it there and then or is there more too it? I can provide I.D in case they need that too.
Would it be an idea to formally type a letter as well (to take with me), in case they say they need it in writing? Any help would be very much appreciated especially as I have only ever had a current account closed for me.
Goodbye Barclays.. woohooo :j :j

Hiya,
It should not be a problem so long as you got your ID and bank stuff. But ring up and make an appointment. I have gone into Barlcays on a Saturday and they told me they could deal with account openings and closing by appointment or during weekdays. I had a massive arguement in the end asking them why they opended on a saturday and the manageress agreed to open the account.
