Landlords - try ringing your agency as a prospective tenant

We are attempting to rent in the Barnstaple area - we have sold our house, completion is at the end of the month and we plan to rent for 6 months as we will be new to Devon and want to take our time deciding where to live.
We have been surprised at how disinterested rental agencies are - we are serious potential business but have to work really hard to get info out of the agencies. If I were a landlord I would be fed up at the low level of salesmanship on my property!
cheers

Part of the problem may be that tenancies in that area are more readily available during the winter months but why bother with a letting agency at all?
Put out your own "wanted" adverts and flyers and post up on Gumtree, Letalife, Vivastreet etc. Check whether there is a contact for a local LL association and find yourself a LL who self-manages ( tends to cut out all those exorbitant fees that LAs like to charge)0 -
you could also contact your local council and ask for a list of Accredited Landlords - who (as well as being vetted by the council) wont charge you as much as agencies do.....0

Thanks all. Our problem is we live in Essex and want to move to Devon - so we can't be on the spot for DIY rental hunting, especially while packing up our home here and working our notice!
