I am an experienced nurse and there always seems to be a shortage of nurses. I work for a primary care trust and we currently have a job freeze. So there are vacancies just no money ...at the moment. this will change it happened a few years ago and then jobs gradually became available again.

The best advice I have is to try and decide early on what area she would like to work I know this changes but try and elect to go on a particular ward, do agency carer shifts there if possible. make your face known, especially to the sister. This is how I got my job and Iwould certainly respond to a keen student in a positive way. i wish her good luck in her studies.....

Yeah i managed to get a job, roughly 14 out of 45 managed to get permanent jobs, the rest got temporary contracts with a view of being offered something in the new financial year.
As a student nurse, you are not expected to do night shifts in your first semester, however by the time you reach your final semster (3rd year 2nd semester), you have to have completed 150 hours worth of night shifts due to having to know the 24 hour cycle of care, i think i ended up doing 237 hours because i wanted to work with my mentor.
At my hospital night shifts are 20:45-7:45 unless in critical care where it is 20:00-8:30. They aren't as bad as you might think, you learn a lot on night shifts!
