How to sell my car?

I've never ever bought or sold a car before.

Mine is due a change - hubby is away for 5 weeks so want to sort it out before he comes back:)

Basically I have the following:-

The Car
Insurance Docs
V5 (new version)
Tax Disc
MOT Cert

What do I need to show or give a buyer? What bits must I keep? I dont want to be in a situation where I sell the car to someone who than holds up a petrol station and the police think its still my car.

Keep it simple please:)

Without going into too much detail, you give the buyer all the handbooks etc related to the car, service history etc. Read the V5 document - it states clearly what you need to do. You give the buyer the green bit, and you send off the rest of the document to the DVLA. That makes sure they know when you sold the car and you wont be responsible for any fines etc that may occur after the date of sale. You give the buyer the MOT. In terms of the road tax, that is to be decided between you and they buyer (in most cases, the negotiated price usually includes the remaining road tax). Forget the insurance docs (the buyer has no interest in your insurance). Make sure you tell the buyer if something is not included in the sale (stereo, carpets etc). Give the buyer a receipt stating what has been purchased (make, model, reg number), the date and the agreed price.

Hope that helps - you can get more detailed advice on the the AA or RAC websites.
