My first garden

I have just moved into a new place with a garden, I have never had a garden before but want to make use of it and try growing some vegetables myself. Trouble is I have no idea what I can plant this time of year veg wise, any suggestions?

Hi there drinkuppretty. It's a bit late to sow things like tomatos but you can still pick up small plants from nurseries or fetes etc.you can still sow lettuces/runner beans/french beans etc. In fact you could have a go at quite a lot.It is supposed to be a fabulous summer so you may do better than you think. My best advice is if you have any allotments nearby pop down and ask for advice, they always have spare plants an are happy to help a newby. You could also ask anybody who has strawberry plants for some of their "babies" you might not get any strawberries this year but you will next year and they will be "free"
Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D

its not too late to start bean/peas or tomatoes, they grown nicely in pots a you can buy them started off from garden centres to make it a little quicker.

French beans, dwarf runners, lettuce, beetroot, radish, spring onions (if you sow later in the year they can be left over winter for early pickings) and spring cabbage can all be sown now.

You could also ask on Freecycle to see if anyone has any surplus plants. If they are like me they will still have stuff in pots that they couldn't bear to chuck on the compost heap. :o

You didn't say where in the country you are, but you will gain a bit of time if you start some seeds off in modules on the kitchen windowsill to plant out when they have a decent root ball.

    Most of all, have fun.

You could also sow some green manure seeds in any bits you're not using. I did this with fenugreek when we moved here - you just let them grow for a while then dig them in.

Just sewn some broccoli and rocket seeds I got from the pound shop. The packet said they can be planted in July so I will see what happens with them.

I was just going to ask the exact same question - I intend getting some planting done this weekend - I know I'm late, but I do have good excuses - honest
