I think you have taken all reasonable steps and precautions and as I said before by confirming any links you click, websites that you visit and downloads you make are genuine you have covered yourself well and minimized the risks.

It is up to the bank/building society to prove that you did not act with care, you do not have to prove you acted with care.

As we are seeing with cards now, banks are slowly passing on the onus to the customers to prove their innocence (particularly after introducing chip and pin).

With online banking it is still relatively early days, but as it usage and hence fraud increases, it be individual who will be pushed to prove that he acted with care -exactly as we see with cards.

A bank's responsibility to "prove it" is written in the Banking Code, and requires the bank to be able to reasonably state that the customer acted with negligence.

A few cases have arisen lately where banks have claimed the customer acted with negligence, but they are both bad PR and would be ruled against by FOS.

So long as the Banking Code says the bank must show it, you'll be fine (as long as you're not being negligent, of course).

    So,

If we can't type the password in because of Keyloggers,

We can't use copy and paste because of trojans/programs that capture screen shots.

What, in everyone's opinion, is the safest way to do this? I can burn my memory stick but then Kavanne says don't write passwords down, it's less secure.

I have about 6 different banks/building societies where I use internet banking. All different passwords, I could not remember them all. Even my password to this forum is different.

How do other posters try and keep their login details secure while protecting themselves from these trojans?

    Andy

Your requirement for accessing 6 different organisations with 6 different logins, and doing it securely, is a spot on candidate for egg money manager. There are other programs that doing something very similar, as I have seen them referred to in discussions on here, but I cannot remember any of them.

Have a google for it. Their website says free to Egg customers, so you could open a savings account with £1 to become a customer, then add all your external accounts. I cannot find a mention of the cost if you don't have an egg account.

Honestly, it makes my life so simple for everyday online banking.

    Macs can get viruses/trojans aswell

If you see one, let me know. As far as I was aware Mac's get Windows viruses and trojans all the time but they don't have any effect because they are designed to exploit Window's architecture not OSX. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've been running Macs for over four years and never had a virus/ trojan.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

The trouble is 8+ weeks is a long time to be without your money. Most people cannot afford to take that risk, however small, and so would feel compelled to do anything the bank asked them to do to protect themselves against fraud.

One of the problems with this is that some banks' T&Cs specifically prohibit the use of such aggregation services.

While such a keyboard is good to have, it should be considered as an addtional tool - the primary focus being to be aware of how we work on the net.
