Passport Service & DVLA

Well impressed with both the Passport Service and the DVLA.

I recently had to renew my passport. I recieved my new one within 3 days.

Also this week I changed the address on my driving licence. I had it back in 2 days.

I was expecting it to take ages so was really pleased! :D

Mine is due for renewal soon and i just wondered if they had brought the retina scan in yet :)
  • What a shame for us then! Just googling around for advice on "lost" passports and found this. We're still waiting on a three week service from the passport office - Only we're into week 5 now! Have rung and emailled the passport office and they are attempting to trace the passport but don't know where it is or where it went! Found them very unhelpful generally. :(

I changed the address on my driving licence too. I sent it last Friday. I called yesterday and they said it had been sent back out on Thursday. I didn't receive it in this morning's post, so I'm hoping it arrives Monday. They do seem to be taking their time with it.

I too have been pleased with the speed of passport renewals. They turned mine around in a few days in the week between Xmas and New Year.

DVLA not so pleased with. First mess up with them recording OH road tax and the computer saying the car isn't taxed and another computer saying it is. Emailed them a copy of tax disc and they agreed it's valid but their system says no. Only found out as I renew on line and it wouldn't let me. Then they admitted they had wrong data about OH car as well. Took weeks for them to put it all right. Luckily we have the DVLA in our City as OH had to go there to renew his tax. Never had an apology.

Then I bought a new car and had two sets of documents for 2 cars two cars to me. I immediately rang both DVLA and garage to tell them there was an error. DVLA said it was impossible to be an error and I would have to submit a transfer to get the car in the correct owners name but it would still show me as a previous keeper. The garage took up the case t sort it out as I don't think they were sure if they had made an error. Took a few months before I heard, and then only from the garage, that I was no longer registered as the keep of the phantom car!

Also you should check when your licence comes back from DVLA that you still have the right catagories of cars you are allowed to drive as there have been problems recently, some of which were highlighted by Watchdog.

The process is not as simple for lost passports and will take longer

I have to echo what the OP said about the DVLA...I sent off application for photocard licence (moved house 8 years ago, sent of change of address but didn't get round to sorting out photocard!) and I received it within 5 days!

Not bad really-took me 8 years and them 5 days!
