Lloyds TSB think I've got 2 contents policies

Options
Hi,
I received a letter from Lloyds TSB today saying it has come to their attention that I have 2 different contents insurance policies and that I should decide which I want to cancel for a possible refund.

When I checked the policy numbers in the letter against my paperwork I can see they've listed my current policy and the one I had in the year before that.
Has anyone else had one of these letters? If they want to refund me for an expired policy that's great but it's probably just a mix-up at their end?
Thanks

I'm guessing you pay your home insurance by direct debit monthly instalmentts.

What has probably happened is they have arranged a new policy and not cancelled the old policy which would automatically renew unless someone stops it.

Check your bank statements to see if you have two lots of instalments cominhg out or if you pay by card check your card statements around the renewal date as you may find you have two payments going out to Lloyds

I paid by credit card for last year's policy and I'm pretty sure it didn't auto renew because I received various letters reminding me to act to renew the policies. (I didn't do that to allow me to get cashback again via Quidco etc.) Also, if it had been renewed I would have thought the policy number wouldn't be the same as the old one and I'd have spotted the money being charged somewhere.
I'll give them a call on Monday.

When a policy renews the Policy number normally remains the same

I phoned them up and they asked me to select a policy to cancel so I picked the one I didn't think I had anyway. I'll get a 50% refund within 40 days apparently.
I've found no evidence that I paid anything for this 'policy'. All I remember is receiving reminders to renew, doing nothing about it, not receiving any new policy paperwork or noticing any unexpected transactions on my statements.
    Very odd.

If you have two policies they should either refund one of the premiums in full or alternatively refund 50% of each premium.

I would have thought in your circumstances eg you arranged a new policy that superceded the other policy with the same provider they should refund the whole of the first premium

I know of somebody who has just had a bill for 2 years premiums as D/D had been set up on somebody else's account.
They have to pay because in that time a claim was made and paid out on the policy.

Just to show it can work both ways.

I finally received a cheque today.
The letter explains that this cheque is a part refund for the Lloyds TSB contents policy and they'll arrange for a separate partial refund for the other policy that was with Sun Alliance but bought via Lloyds TSB.

My renewal reminder for the buildings policy arrived a week or so ago and it appears to be the same as last year where no renewal should happen if I do nothing. Maybe the contents renewal procedure is different but I still can't see how I ended up with 2 policies. I'll just keep a close eye on my statements this year and enjoy what at least seems like free money.
