Section 75 on part payments

Hi,
Am I right in thinking if I pay the deposit for a holiday on a credit card (incurring a 2.5% charge) and then settle the rest later by debit card or other method of payment (to avoid the charge) the whole cost of the holiday is still covered by section 75 protection?
The debit card will be visa debit so may afford some protection but I'd rather not rely on it!
Thanks
(Edit: just to add the holiday is through an ATOL & ABTA registered agent)

Hi,
Yeah you're right - pay the deposit on a credit card and the credit card company is liable for whole amount.
There's some good stuff here that might help give you more reassurance:

Thanks.. thought it did, just wanted to run it past the minds here first as its a honeymoon so want to make sure I can do everything possible to avoid problems!!0

Hi only the part you pay on the credit card is covered, they are not going to cover the rest.0

That's incorrect.Hi only the part you pay on the credit card is covered, they are not going to cover the rest.
At it's extreme you could pay a deposit of £1 for an item costing £25,000 (shortly to be increased to £30,000?) and the credit card provider is jointly and severally liable for the entire purchase price of £25,000 (£30,000?).0 -
I would disagree as they are only liable upto the maximum amount of the transaction on their card.0
-
Suggest you google it then. Try the OFT, FOS, and OPSI.gov (for the act itself) sites. Or you could even read Martin Lewis' article on the subject on this site.I would disagree as they are only liable upto the maximum amount of the transaction on their card.

Mate Yorkshireboy is spot on, its always been the case.... its madness but the rules clearly say pay a portion on your card and the whole purchase will be covered.

However getting the cc company to pay up can be a different matter! Still arguing with Nationwide who are trying everything they can to avoid paying.0
