There's no such thing as "married man's tax" any longer as there is no Married Couple's Allowance (and rightly so).
From 6 April, the tax allowance rises to £5,035 - but as you have children, you may also be in receipt of Working Families Tax Credit, depending on your joint income. This will change the tax code and allow you to earn more before becoming liable for income tax.
If your partner is a member of a trade union, it may offer a tax-checking service (my union, Unison, does) which will let you know if you have a claim for overpaid tax but will not notify the Inland Revenue if you have been undertaxed. The scruples of this are questionable, but it's worth taking advantage of the offer if it's available.Mortgage at outset (May 2004): £80,000
Mortgage now (October 2007): £58,000
Original mortgage-free date: May 2024
Expected mortgage-free date: December 2014
Projected interest saving: £21,1000 -
yes we have got child tax credit not working tax as he earns too much
We have been down inland revenue a few months ago and they said its right but my OH still says he thinks its too high i dont really want to put the details on here as everyone can see them but just wondered if there was a website i could check
I tried the calculater with the tax code his got and it works out roughly the same as what his bringing home but just wondered if his got the right tax code
And there is no union at his place(wish there was)0 -
WFTC no longer exists, the new system is WTC/CTC, and no longer alters your tax code. Instead, it now pays directly, tax free , based on your Gross Income.
Does he have a tax code higher than £5035 ?
If so then he must have something like a company car or other benefit ? If you know what theses extra benefits are , he can check again with HMRC to see that they've got the figures right,I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
His tax code is lower than that
We get his wages, ctc and child benefit
my eldest son is at college so we still get ctc and child benefit for him0 -
The tax code is made up of the allowances you are due, less any deductions.
For the tax year that ends today, the Personal Allowance is £4895 (which is the 'tax free' amount), and this is turned into the standard tax code of 489L. If your OH's tax code is not this, then there are some other things in it.
What code does his payslip show? Does it have an X, or Wk/Mth1 after it, or start with a K?0 -
This is a bit helpful (?) if you read it in conjunction with his coding notice :
http://www.direct.gov.uk/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/Taxes/BeginnersGuideToTax/BeginnersGuideToTaxArticles/fs/en?CONTENT_ID=4015472&chk=iIHw8P
and these are the up to date Allowances ;

If the number is higher, then that means he has more allowances, and is therefore paying less tax than if he had just the personal allowance.
There probably something in there to do with expenses, e.g washing a uniform or something.
What does the last notice of coding he has show?0 -
His tax code is 529L if this helps0

That means that for some reason he has an extra £400 allowances than the standard personal allowance. Do you have any of the notices of coding anywhere. These will explain what it is for. If not, ring HMRC and find out what it is there for.0
