    Even if you moved, most mortgage applications want the last 5/7/10 yrs worth of addresses. If you moved into a flat, registered and then applied, they will still want to go back and check the electoral roll history.

    The problem here is that the MIL is not EXEMPT from Council Tax (exemptions are for example if she is a student/diplomat etc etc) .... moreover she is in receipt of Council Tax BENEFIT (possibly even Housing Benefit) which she would not be entitled to (or a reduced amount of) if you declare you live there

    Yes her Council Tax will increase if you declare you are there but I work in Council Tax and i get anonymous letters daily from neighbours, 'friends', even relatives.

    Also, Charlotte 664, it doesn't necessarily mean if you do not have a checkble 5-10yrs of addresses you will fail a mortgage applic. I went travelling for 2 years and was removed with no problems whatsoever
