I'd get your moving costs and a bit extra. We're moving at the end of July and I reckon with removals, boxes, post etc it's going to cost at least £1k.

  • Well, the landlord and landlady have both been around. They've been assuming from the start that I would be wanting to stay until the six months were up and have been making plans on that basis - storage, renting house from friends etc, so they were extremely grateful that I was prepared to look at other options. Landlady was nearly in tears. So we've agreed that I'll be totally flexible, there will be some cash in it for me and help with moving if it does happen. But it's by no means guaranteed that it will as have been p!ss!d around by buyers for several months. They genuinely don't want to p!!s me around, were unintentional landlords in the first place, and have had their pension dreams shattered through their hugely dropped from asking price (though realistic) offer. They're not money grabbing scum. They don't want to screw me. I don't want to screw them. We're now working together to help each other out as best we can. It's good to talk, as the ad goes...

  • Not everyone in this crazy property game is out out to sh!ft everyone else. Good negotiation is negotiation that creates a win-win situation! Although I do accept that there are a lot of money grabbing ba!!!rd landlords out there... fortunately mine are just a very nice, reasonable couple. Let's hope the next ones are too.

i think this sounds more than fair. if they want you to leave before your tenancy is up they either have to give you proper notice to quit which is 2 months from a rent date, or you can come to an adult arranagement that will leave both sides happy.. i dont think compensating you for having to move out early is too much to ask, after all you are doing them a favour as i doubt their buyer will want to wait until september for completion and their only other alternative is to go and rent somewhere themselves until you move out in september.
My highlighting. Obviously, the OP is happy with his/her specific arrangement but, just for clarity, where a T is still within a Fixed Term and the LL is selling up, the LL cannot simply serve two month's notice on the T. The AST has to stand until its original expiry date, unless agreement can be reached.

Nice to read a thread with a balanced viewpoint and showing what good communication between LL&T is all about  Good luck with getting somewhere new.
