Maternity Pay or Allowance? Don't know what to do.

Hi all,
I found out (yesterday) that I'm pregnant. My OH and I have just bought a house out in the sticks, which we're planning on relocating to, but were both looking for jobs more local to there before we move.
We both currently work full time.
Now, we were planning on moving up there as soon as one of us had a job, but now this has happened.
I understand that I will only get statutory maternity pay from my current employer, but that would be mean hanging on in this job until earliest December and moving then. My current employer offers nothing above the statutory rate (very basic).
If my OH found a job and we moved, I risk not finding work (being unemployable) and being scuppered with just the one wage coming in. Or I could temp and get the government allowance I guess.
Are there any other options I could do that anyone knows of?
Thanks!

  • Hi, even if you were to move now as long as you have 13 weeks payslips you can claim MA which has the same upper limit as SMP. If your current employer was only going to pay SMP anyway then all you'd lose out is was the money you'd have earned between moving up and your due date. :p If I were you I'd move as soon as your other half or you find a job close to the new house.

Best of luck with the baby and the job hunt :D

I don't want to be negative, but I wouldn't do anything until you are well into the second trimester of the pregnancy, just in case.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!
