Hi

I am looking to buy a Ford Mondeo for between £2000 and £2500.

I have seen a few for sale locally and just wondered if anybody had any buying tips for the car, other than watch the mileage.

From what I have seen, I should be able to get an 02 or 03 plate wirh about 65,000 and 70,000 miles on the clock.

Thanks

Martin

I've got an 2003 I've had from new (no I'm not trying to sell it to you LOL) It is a measure of how much I love the car that when I bought a new Suzuki Jimny for camping and fun I kept the Mondeo instead of PXing it.

My car has done around 46,000 miles in the 6 years I've had it. The only things that have needed doing are
    1) Mondeos are heavy on tyres for some reason and it sure isn't my driving style.
    2) The engine light came on recently and was diagnosed by RAC as misfire in cylinder 1. Coil was replaced and that sorted it. Engine had been 'juddery' for a few weeks especially in the morning after cold starts. New spark plugs at service didn't fix it but the new coil did.
    3) Subframe bushes needed replacing as well. That's another Mondeo quirk.

I really like it and know a lot of people who love theirs too. Big comfy cars that do everything well. Loads of space for dog and gear and family. Cavernous boot. Thoughtful storage space. Bit of a 'rep' reputation but that never bothered me.

There's a forum at fordmondeo.org You could join there and ask you question for some more specialist advice.

Good luck. I'm sure you'll like it when you get it.

    Hi Takoda

    Thanks for the advice.

The website looks good, I will have a good look through this weekend and I hope to have the car within the week, just need to look at a few.

Subframe bushes went on my old Mony too. Listen for a knock from the rear when going over a bump.

No problem mealmond. Happy to help. I'm sure hewhoisnotintheknow is right about clutches being expensive but mines still as good as the day I drove it off the forecourt at least it fells that way.

    Just an update.

    Today, I have been to see a 2004 54 plate , 1.8LX with 78,000 on the clock.

Bar a few small marks the car seems fine, the engine ran well and the log book is up to date.

The car is available at £2945.

The seller made it clear he was selling under what he paid, I have not heard that before, and wanted the ticket price.

Anyway, what would be a fair price to offer without insulting him, it will be a cash sale.

    Thanks

is it a private sale? strange price for a private sale if it is i think.
i would offer £2600,maybe push to £2700 as it has slightly above average miles for age.

    Thanks for the reply goldspanners.

Hope I'm not confusing things, the car is for sale with a dealer who does not have his own premises while major refurbishment work is being done, I know the garage, they have a good reputation.

He is just selling a few cars from home and from the internet, in he current climate he is unsure if to take out a new lease on the premises.

I saw the car on the internet and as I said it looks good although I am aware the the mileage is a bit higher than average.

I have also seen a another Mondeo, a 2003 2.0 TDCI 115LX, 80,000 miles, which looks ok bar some small damage to the front bumper, but I thought as the car is mainly used for short journeys, the 1.8 would be the better option. Also the TDCI has a towbar, which worried me a little.

I will make an offer on the 1.8 tomorrow and see how I get on.

I agree, stick with petrol for short journeys, modern diesels can get into trouble with long term short journey use that can get expensive.
