How To Stop Unsolicited Phone Calls From Companies

We are FED UP with getting bothered by pestiferous finance companies ringing us up to offer different services (e.g. home insurance, loans etc.). The voice is usually an automated machine.
Is there no way we can stop these unwanted phone calls? Somebody said there is a number you can ring to block them out, but I am unsure exactly which number it is.
We are with Tesco Home Phone, but the line is BT's.
Especially annoying is the fact that I am jobless and everytime I hear the phone ring, I hope it is an employer - but it NEVER is, just these nuisance companies bombarding us with offer after offer!
Hope somebody can help us block these calls out forever.
Thanks.

Whats the benefit of having your line rental with BT and your calls with Tesco?0 -
Sorry, my mistake. The line rental IS with Tesco, as it is included on our Tesco Phone Bill. (Haven't had the changeover long, you see, so just getting accustomed to everything.)Register with the TPS.

Same question. What did/do/will you gain/save by doing that?Sorry, my mistake. The line rental IS with Tesco, as it is included on our Tesco Phone Bill. (Haven't had the changeover long, you see, so just getting accustomed to everything.)Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Do what I do wind them up. I once had the woman from Florida cruises or whatever it is called on the phone for 30 mins, Let them do their speil then ask a question so they do it all over again. When they ask for your credit card number tell them you have to go look for it and put the phone down, if they are still on the phone when you get back ask another question, repeat as required. Read out a fake credit card number and when they tell you it does'nt go through say oh that must be an old card from when I was bankrupt I will go and look for the new card. Repeat until they hang up:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
