Abbey National Extortionate Bank Charges

How can abbey justify £521 bank charges to a sole trader in 1 day i have had this since 2002 and had only mounted up approx £1200-£1300 in charges in the years leading up to june 2009 the majority of the time being in the black, banking between £130,000-£150,000 a year for some of these years. we work in the construction industry and took a big hit from one of our customers and had some very late payers. We applied for an overdraft facility in November and were refused as we had gone slightly overdrawn ,not by much in some months prior,we only needed to have this facility as working capital to get through the economic down turn, when ispoke to them the other day the lady did not understand why we were refused and passed me on to the complaints department which the first person I SPOKE TO COULD NOT GIVE A ('*") I have just learnt that the Co-operative bank will only charge a maximum of £150 per quarter on unpaid charges which for pressing a few buttons is still alot but not as bad as my lot that seem to think they have the right to attempt to bankrupt small businesses that are the back bone of our country, despite government requesting banks help small companies.

  • are you sure the £521 in one day does not include business charges for paying in/taking out as well as unpaid fees which were monthly?
You need to clarify exactly what the charges are first and what they are for then reclaim them.

On the subject of Abbey National:

It is my understanding that they have now been (or shortly will be) taken over by a Spanish Company, Santander.

Will this mean that they can "walk away" from their historic liabilities such as the bank charge claims presently lying in limbo?

Apologies if this is considered a stupid question!

UTCCR 1999 came from a EU directive. Abbey are still acting under UK law with regards to bank contracts, so nope it has no affect on it.

No, they are still liable regardless
