Goodwill Payment made

The Halifax Bank made a goodwill payment to me directly into my account and without showing any details of what the payment was, without my asking for one, or even my suggesting I would accept it. I had expected a salary payment of close to the sum paid by the bank and as such paid bills with it as is my normal practice. As this was a 'goodwill gesture' on their part without my requesting it, and I have a written letter from them to prove it was a goodwill payment made by them, can they deduct this from my outstanding claims against them?
By being unavailable for well past the time frame they had given me to either approve it or return it due to personal reasons beyond my control have they any right to demand its repayment or deduction?
I have 4 accounts with them but only 2 are affected by claims so what is likely to happen?

Ask them the question what they money is for, if they haven't responded to your letter call them or go into a branch and ask them to investigate what the money is and where it has come from and what it is for.0
