Back dating CTC

Sorry if this has been covered before but I just feel so low after a call to the TCO.

This is what has happened.....

Got made redundent this tax year so just post 06/04/09. Got income based JSA. Was advised by JCP to apply for CTC as I have 3 kids. I have never appiled for any sort of TC before so a new claim. Got the pack and sent if off. After a few weeks heard nothing so called only to be told not on the system, call back. I started to call back daily. On one of the calls the adviser said the best thing to do is once you get the award ask for it to be back dated to 90 days even though by this time it had only been 25 days since i put the claim in. He said 99% of people are able to get CTC so just ask for it to be back dated. A week later i get the award and it is back dated to the date i put the claim in. Called the TCO to ask if I could get it back dateded to 90 days and the adviser just "humed and ured" on the phone and then said OK i will send this off to the tax office but YOU will get a call, as if to say you should not be asking but I will send it off and they will call you to give you a slap ...... I just felt I should be happy and should not be asking for any thing else.

Just made me feel so bad.....I was only asking as a adviser said I should:confused:

OK some advise please.

Can CTC be back dated to before you submit your claim by just asking.

If it can then do they call you in the process or am i going to be called to be put in my place.

Thanks

  • The CTC can be backdated up to 93 days from the date your claim is received.

Give it around 4 weeks and then give them a call back if you havent heard anything. Not sure why there seemed to be a problem with your request.

TCO will only call you if they need further information but normally they will just write to you instead.

When your claim is backdated all you will receive is a new award showing that they have backdated the claim and telling you your new payment details which include the backdated amount.

Just a quick thought how meny time can CTC be backdated to a max of 93 days. The reason I ask is when I put the claim in I said could it be backdated to 1/05/09 as this was when my JSA started but now I have asked for it to be backdated by 93 days from june 4 2009 as advised...

Also any one know why even though they start to pay the money and have been for over 10days no paper work has been recived in the post to show a brakedown.

    Thanks

  • As soon as a payment schedule is generated an award notice is produced and issued to you. It takes around 2/3 days for the payment to get to your bank but it can take a bit longer (especially with the amount of post being issued by TCO right now) to be received. If you dont have it by next week give them a call and ask for it to be re-issued.
  • You can request the backdating but it may be very complicated as you will need to have your JSA details removed from your claim and your previous work details entered on to the system, then removed from the date you left. Then the JSA details would need to be re-entered.

You are within your rights to make the full request but it may take a while.

You may be best to write them a letter.
If you do, make sure you make the letter as clear and detailed as possible -
You want your maximum 93 days backdating
You were working prior to the date - then give your employer's details: Name, address, postcode, tel number, PAYE ref number (shown on P45 or P60). Also tell them the number of hours you were working each week.
Tell them the date you left the job and re-iterate the date your JSA was awarded from.

Sorry to go on but in a nut shell. I lost my job on 01/05/09 then went onto IB JSA so big drop in income this tax year 06/04/09 onwards. CTC started no 1/06/09, I think. Would not be due anything from last tax year but to make every bodies life easy based on the post above, should I call the TCO and just ask for my case to be backdated until say 07/04/06 so only for this tax year.

    Thanks

The complicated bit is more going back to before 010509, as the bit of the award after it would be at the highest rate, but the bit before would be at a rate based on your income. If you're going to ask for it before 010509, you might as well ask for the full 3 months. Just make sure they understand you were not on JSA (IB) before that date.
