need to replace old boiler.what do you reccomend?

we are having a new extension built and our old gas boiler(28 yrs old) wont be able to cope with the extra radiators.
we currently run 8 rads but will increase to 10 /11.
it is a ordinary boiler with tank.
what would you recomend?

Good morning: A RGI, after conducting a site survey and consulting with you about your CH and DHW needs, would be best placed to advise. Ask friends, family etc for a recommendation and check the RGI's registration on Gas Safe Register. Post your quotes on here and those 'in the know' could comment.
Cost will be dependent on your location in the UK as well as the standard of the specification.

Just had BG round to service my boiler today and he explained that some parts were no longer available and that I ought to consider replacing it in the next year or two.

I declined the offer for a BG sales visit and suggested I would source the boiler and get a GAS Safe registered plumber to fit. Mentioned I was looking at a Baxi / Potterton type. He recommended spending an extra £200-300 and sourcing either a Worcester / Bosch or a Vailant boiler as he had seen fewer breakdown problems with these.

He seemed genuine when he said this, having already taken his "sales hat" off when he realised BG would not get the work.

I'm sure all brands have their fans / dissentors though.

Worcester Bosch Condensing type boiler if you're on gas. Seperate tank.

Very high efficiency and reliable machine.

I too would recommend a Vaillant boiler, the company I work for are only installing them if we condemd an old one.

Apparently the heat exchanger components are no longer available. Now from what I know about heat exchangers in other industries, they are simply a pipe matrix with no moving parts. I suspect if the HE fails it really probably is time for a new boiler.

The engineer had no problems sourcing a new circuit board for it though.
I only did the quick research on price in order to head off any hard sell from BG. Quite happy to see how long this one soldiers on for

Good afternoon: Viessmann has produced an excellent guide to condensing boiler technology (and their heat exchanger is quite different to that described by others). Viessmann and Remeha use stainless steel heat exchangers (as opposed to the aluminium used by Worcester Bosch) and installers can offer a 5 year parts and labour warranty.

I omitted a link for the OP in an earlier post.... the Energy Saving Trust's guide on the specification and installation of gas central heating.
