Any suggestions?

I would suggest one of these HP550 laptops.
You could get probably away with this one if you added an extra 1GB of RAM

but I think it might be better to go for a better processor with this very well priced version:

You could also look for laptops with a T1600 Celeron dual core processor as these provide reasonable low cost performance for around £300 which will cope with your needs,0 -
Thanks I have seem this one
TOSHIBA L300-20D0 -

Sorry to sound thick, but how would I get the extra GB0

You would go to a place like Cruicial UK or Ebuyer and buy a 1GB memory card with same type of memory already present and put it in the slot, which will located under a small cover on the bottom of the laptop.

If the laptop comes with both slots filled with 512mb cards you'll need two 1GB cards to replace them.0 -
Dead easy to add memory. If you can replace a light bulb, you'll be able to replace/add memory.0

If you go to Crucial you can enter the model of your laptop and they'll tell you what it can take. In general the more memory the better.
But consider that upgrading the machine from day 1 effectively means that it costs more, so take that into account when comparing prices.
You can get a 10% credit if you go to Crucial via Quidco; I recently bought some memory and it was cheaper than ebay to start with and then I got some back on Quidco too!0 -
