Dishwasher cleaner in Washing Machine?

I know there is plenty of advice on how to stop your washing machine being smelly - but would like to know if anyone else has tried this. My friend told me that she puts a dishwasher cleaner through her machine every few months and I was wondering if this would be safe to do.
My machine is oftern smelly - I try the vinegar and bi-carb etc but after a few weeks the smell is back as bad as ever. Mr friend says that she never has this problem since using the dishwasher cleaner but I am just a bit concerned about any damage it may do to the machine.
Any views or advice?

Dishwashers, washing machines, sinks and bathtubs get dirty even though they are meant to clean things. The problem is, the items you put in to your dishwasher, washing machine etc, are DIRTY. Though, most dirt and soil is washed out with the water, dirt, soap residue and other unidentifiable grungy objects can be left behind. Putting a full container of Tang through and empty dish cycle is a great way to clean your dishwasher. Try running the washing machine on a full cycle empty with hot water and two cups of vinegar or lemon juice. You can really tell the difference.0

Do you use liquid or powder in your washing machine? I have had no problems since stopping using liquids and going back to big box powder.0

Many thanks - yes I only use liquid detergent.
I have just read the article in Post no 3 and have set my machine for a hot wash with the dishwasher solution - just 2 hours and I hope to be smell free!!
