Key meter

I have just bought a flat and there are key meters installed(pay as you go). Are these a good thing to have or are they expensive to use? Is my gas and electric at the same price as if I were being billed quaterly?

Many thanks in advance

Key and Card meter are always expensive to have and are only adviseable if you have real problems paying bills on time.
Have the supplier come and re-set the meter?.
Check there is no debt on them. do this by pressing the buttom on the front. it will tell you your ppu (pence per unit) and will also tell you if there is a debt.
The current supplier should come out and re-set the meters for you but I would advise getting them changed for a normal meter. This should be done free of charge.
If the previous owner had bad debt with the company ( that is why key/card meters are often fitted)
You may need to prove you are the new owner. any letter from the Sols should clear up any issues.
Once your meter has been changed, make sure the company have updated their details correctly. not all meters are fitted on reading of 0000. and this can cause problems in the future.
Basically. just keep all your readings/meter details in a safe place forever.
    And good luck.

This it isn't always true anymore. With the recent price rises some suppliers have evened out the cost so it is exactly the same price to be on a prepayment meter as it is to pay quarterly or weekly. The only discount is gained by paying by direct debit. So if you like the idea of a prepayment meter(personally I can't stand them :D ) then it's worth checking with your supplier whether it is costing you more or not.

equi gas n electric aslso know as ebico charge the same on a pre pay meter or normal meter. Most other firms do charge extra for them and they are a pain as
when we had them quite often the computer system needed to add credit onto the card was not working locally so I ended up driving for miles to find a working machine

if you want to change the meters you may be charged by BGas but we found scottish power did it for free

funny thing is they are not charged by the meter management ppl - so why do they charge to change them??
