repainting tiles or replacing with value white?

we have horrible gold/patterned tiles in my pretty modern-ish looking bathroom. i'm at the end of my tether with them.
would it be cheaper to repaint (it's a large area - 3 half walls) or replace with value white tiles?
the old tiles also have a slight raised pattern on them which i imagine would cause problems...
so primer, paint, rollers etc vs. value tiles & all other items???
i've never tiled so don't know what the costs amount to. recommendations?

Tiles would be the better option, but would be more pricey, probably about £300 ish labour for a small bathroom (plus cost of tiles).Raised pattern shouldn't be a problem as long as it is just slight. However I personally thing tile paint is just a cheap bodge fix and looks naff/doesn't last. I appreciate not everyone can afford to replace tiles, however I know I would prefer ugly, but well fitted tiles in good nick to onces with naff tile paint over them.

I would not touch tile paint with a bargepole. It seems to me that painting over tiles is completely negating the idea of tiling in the first place. You sometime see it on these house programs and it is recommended by people who would probably never go within 100 miles of it for themselves.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Quite agree..step away from the tile paint
If 3 large walls are tiled, I'd personally retile only the minimum wet areas in better quality tiles. Replaster the rest of the walls which don't get wet, & paint with bathroom paint. Much easier to change your mind or colour scheme next time.0 -
Removing exisitng tiles from substrate usually creates problems, Damaging board or plaster
Dont tile on tile

Tile-paint is a no no...but a good primer like Zinsser 1-2-3 and a solvent-based satin finish does look as though they are just white tiles. It's the primer that's the big issue as it's the stuff that keys to, covers and protects the tiles. I've found that the tile paint you get, i.e. Thompson's (which is by Ronseal
) doesn't give a decent finish, or provide a durablilty...
Cost for painting, between £17 and £35.0
