    If you are at all worried then split it. Do some on the books at a low price and pay the extra as cash in hand. That way you have a paper trial if anything goes wrong but have still saved some money.

    As long as the guy is competent to do his job then you have nothing to wory about. If however you suspect you may have problems why don't you split the package. Get all new brick and blockwork done by your mate and just get a fully insured builder in to knock the opening in the wall. By the way, what size opening are we talking about, what tyoe of construction/age is you house?

    With regard paying cash as the others have said, you pay him and then he does what he chooses with the money. You don't worry that when you by food from the market that somebody is not lining Gordon Brown's oversized pocket, do you?

    At the end of the day it boild down to trust............thats a bit Jerry Springer:rotfl:

    Oh i couldnt give a monkeys about him dodging tax.

    The house was built in 1930 brick built 3 bedroom semi with the extension going on the side. The section of wall to come out will be about 1.5m wide by 2m ish high. His brother will be helping him too & he is the head foreman of the construction company they work for so there's no lack of experience.

    I just like to have all angles covered cos after all if something goes wrong & my house falls in I dont want to be left with an expensive pile of rubble!

    I trust the guy but hes not the sharpest knife in the draw if you know what i mean & that tends to be my overall experience of builders. They just dont fill me with confidence!
