Any advice on renting grstefully recieved

Hi everyone, this is my first post but I have been reading for a while - just wondered if anyone can help me out with some advice. I'm currently renting a house I like, I've been here for a year and to be honest don't really want to move - it's so much work! However, I've looked around on some websites and can see some houses in the same area for the same price but a bit better quality than mine - eg a driveway included (we park on the street) or semi detached (ours is a terrace). We pay £525 pcm, I think 500pcm would be more reasonable - the property market's changed, I think!

So (sorry this is a longer post than I anticipated) is it worth writing to our letting agency and asking for a review of the price, or do you think that will prompt them to just advertise out property? I don't want to lose the house, and it would be a lot of stress if we did, but at the same time I don' want to pay more than I need to.

Thanks for any help, i really appreciate it. :);)

is £35 per month really that much to bear ? how much will it cost you to move ? - if you were talking £100+pcm - i would say go for it
  • No I guess not. But I wondered if it was at least worth writing a letter. Hmm, maybe you're right

What would the LA fees be to move to a new property?! That may well negate the cheaper rent elsewhere over a year. If you are long term renters, and have had a good deal where you are with LL and LA, and a good relationship, my advice would be to stay and see if there is any give on the current rent. If not, you take a big gamble on the new place being better. Cheaper doesn't always mean better.

It is definately worth asking about a reduction. My only advice would be to not make any threats that you would not be willing to carry out. You just end up looking silly if the LL calls your bluff.

Be armed with ammunition to argue your point. Comparable property on the market at cheaper rent than you are paying.

my gran's next door neighbours asked for a rent reduction, received back a notice to leave at the end of the month... so be warned that you might end up leaving not on your terms.
  • You have nothing at all to lose by asking.

It is a renter's market out there; and any Landlord that risks a void and fees for re-advetising, instead of reassessing terms in light of a moving market, is a fool.
  • Thanks everyone, i appreciate the replies. think i'll ring on Monday and ask for a bit of a reduction, but backtrack if not. Thanks for helping :)
  • I phoned today and asked for 480, she came back with £500, thanks everyone, saved £25 a month, that's £300 a year, very happy!
